Designing and Assessing Digital Projects

What makes a digital project worth assigning — and worth assessing carefully. Assessment frameworks that balance creativity and rigor, and feedback practices calibrated to multimodal work.

Why Digital Project Assessment Breaks Down

Faculty assign digital projects — podcasts, websites, infographics, data visualizations — genuinely excited about the possibilities, and then find themselves in front of thirty student submissions wondering: how do I evaluate this fairly? What counts as excellent? Am I grading the argument or the production value?

These are not problems of individual grading decisions. They are problems of assignment design. When digital projects are under-designed — vague rhetorical purpose, unspecified audience, generic criteria, unclear production requirements — students compensate by optimizing for what they can control, which is usually aesthetics. The result is polished-looking work with thin disciplinary substance, and rubrics that inadvertently reward design fluency over critical thinking.

Three assessment traps appear with particular frequency:

Aesthetics Inflation

Overweighting visual design because it's the most legible dimension. Often correlates with socioeconomic access to design tools and prior training — not disciplinary competence.

Checklist Deflation

So many discrete criteria that holistic rhetorical effectiveness gets lost. Students who comply with requirements without thinking rhetorically still score well.

Reflection Afterthought

Making students write a reflection but weighting it so lightly — or not reading it carefully — that students learn it's a box to check. The primary evidence of rhetorical learning disappears.

The Assignment Design Principle

Digital projects that are under-designed produce assessment problems that no rubric can solve. The fix is upstream, in how the assignment specifies rhetorical purpose, audience, and the relationship between modes and argument.


Assessment Frameworks That Fit Multimodal Work

A good assessment framework for digital projects does four things: it foregrounds rhetorical effectiveness as the primary criterion; it separates content/argument from technical execution while recognizing they're connected; it makes the reflective component meaningful rather than token; and it describes quality aspirationally — telling students what excellent looks like rather than primarily cataloging failure.

The four dimensions of digital project assessment work in a specific hierarchy:

Rhetorical Effectiveness

Did this project accomplish its stated purpose for its stated audience? Does it make clear, discipline-appropriate claims? Does it use modes intentionally in service of those claims? This is always the most heavily weighted dimension.

Disciplinary Content

Is the information correct, appropriately sourced, and at the right level for the audience? Does the project demonstrate genuine understanding of course content, not surface familiarity?

Secondary

Technical Execution

Is the product functional and accessible? Are design choices serving communication rather than substituting for it? Technical excellence should never outweigh rhetorical and intellectual quality.

Meaningful — 15–25%

Reflective Component

Does the student's reflection demonstrate rhetorical intentionality — can they articulate why they made the choices they did? Read before the project. The reflection changes how you read the product.

Write Excellent First

Write the "excellent" descriptor first for each dimension, then work downward. Rubrics written from "poor" upward tend to describe failure rather than aspiration — a documented problem in writing assessment research.

For feedback on digital projects, several approaches work well. Screencasting — recording yourself navigating the project with audio commentary — is effective for websites and data visualizations because you point to specific choices as you comment. Audio feedback recorded in response to the project is efficient and research consistently shows students engage more deeply with it than written comments. In either mode, identify the pattern rather than every instance.

AI Tools and Assignment Design — A Decision You're Already Making

When you design a digital project, you are making a decision about how AI tools figure into the task — whether you name it or not. An assignment that doesn't address AI has addressed it: it has left students to navigate the question individually and inconsistently, which produces inequitable outcomes and uneven work. The decision is not whether to allow or prohibit; the decision is whether to make the grounds for your choice explicit, and whether your assessment criteria reflect it. Module 3 of this certificate provides the analytical framework for making that decision on principled grounds and building it explicitly into your assignment design. For now, the question to carry into your activity is: where do AI tools enter this project, and does your assessment framework account for that?

Activity 1

Build an Assessment Framework for a Digital Project

Individual design workshop · 60–75 minutes

Choose the digital project type you want to assess — something you would realistically assign in your course. Build an assessment framework that evaluates rhetorical effectiveness, disciplinary content, technical execution, and the reflective component as distinct but related dimensions. Then identify the three most likely student failure modes and verify your criteria address them.

Activity 2

Evaluate Sample Student Digital Projects

Individual evaluation practice · 45–60 minutes

The best way to test an assessment framework is to use it on actual student work. Access the two sample student digital projects in your course resource library (both infographics produced in response to the same prompt). Evaluate each using your Activity 1 framework, then write a short feedback memo for each addressed to the student who produced it.

Your feedback memo (150–200 words each) should: open by naming the project's clearest rhetorical strength; identify the single most important revision that would improve rhetorical effectiveness (not visual design); close with one specific, actionable suggestion the student can act on before resubmission.
