The Oral Communication Instruction certificate is currently being designed. Module content will be available in Spring 2026. The structure below reflects the certificate design — workbooks will be added as modules are completed.
What this certificate will address
Teaching oral communication is not simply asking students to present. It involves understanding how speaking conventions differ across disciplines, how communication apprehension affects performance and learning, and how to assess oral work in ways that develop students as communicators rather than just evaluating them as performers.
The Oral Communication Instruction certificate will give faculty frameworks for designing scaffolded speaking assignments, rubrics that distinguish skill development from nervousness, and strategies for teaching disciplinary oral communication — from STEM presentations to clinical interviews to seminar discussion leadership.

Principles of Public Speaking Instruction
Classical rhetoric, effective speech structure, communication apprehension reduction, and scaffolded speaking assignments. How to teach improvisation and build speaker confidence across a semester.

Oral Communication Across Disciplines
How speaking conventions differ across STEM, humanities, and social sciences — and across formal and informal contexts. Code-switching, field-specific presentation models, and designing speaking assignments that engage authentic disciplinary practice.

Assessing Oral Communication
Rubric design for oral performance, peer evaluation models, and strategies for reducing grading workload without reducing feedback quality. How to distinguish communication skill from performance anxiety in assessment.

Creating Engaging Speaking Assignments
Designing assignments that build creativity, engagement, and authentic audience awareness. Peer review of student speaking assignment designs.
Multilingual Considerations in Oral Communication
Speech challenges for L2 learners, cultural speaking norms, accessibility, and strategies for inclusive speaking instruction.
